Scores of people turned out Sunday to see the Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive towed along a 25-mile route to its new home in Frisco.

“It’s been so gratifying to see so many people here and share this,” said Bob LaPrelle, president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Museum of the American Railroad.

Andy Stephenson of Prosper came out with his family to watch the 1.2 million-pound locomotive pull into Frisco.

“It’s impressive, bigger than I would have ever expected.”

The Big Boy No. 4018 is one of only eight such locomotives still in existence, and it’s rare to see one on the tracks. The museum, stationed in Fair Park for 50 years, is relocating to a much bigger site in Frisco. No. 4018 was the last of the museum’s 42 passenger cars and locomotives to be moved.

The journey from Fair Park to Frisco took longer than expected because of heavy rail traffic, so museum officials split the trip into two days. On Aug. 18, the locomotive made it to Irving. On Sunday, it finished the trip.

A museum open house is planned in Frisco in late September. Limited group tours will start in late October. Classroom programs will also be available this fall. The museum is also accepting volunteers.

The museum plans a $2.5 million fundraising campaign to build the remaining exhibit tracks and viewing platforms. That will be followed by a $7.5 million campaign for an education center and exhibit hall.
